Boracay Philippines

I’ve just spent a week on this stunning Filipino island and happily admit to being hooked. Glorious white sand beaches, warm, deep blue, crystal clear waters and easy laid back swimming days won me over.

Destination Philippines was my answer to exiting an overseas travel holding pattern as well as a chilly Aussie winter. And, so far, there’s not been an iota of disappointment.

This South East Asian country delivers islands by the thousands – 7641 to be precise, so it made sense to first hit up the jewel in the Filipino tourist crown.

We flew into Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, also known as Caticlan Airport from Manila on Air Asia. Flight time: 55 mins. The airport on nearby Panay Island is a simple, short ferry ride from Boracay. For a seamless transfer, book the ferry/car through your hotel.

Yes, Boracay, whose core business is alluring beaches, certainly lives up to its touristy reputation. To be honest, it was way more touristy than I was led to believe. Koreans have discovered this island beauty and Filipinos continue their life long devotion to their country’s most popular island. It’s easy to look past the tourism though to appreciate Borocay’s appeal.

A week ensconced at Feliz Hotel in the heart of DMall surrounded by good cafes, restaurants, ubiquitous souvenir shops all within 25 steps from White Beach was holiday heaven.

The trademark White Beach is long; it stretches for 4 kms and is divided into stations 0, 1, 2 and 3. Each day we walked its length, stopping often to plunge into the warm water. The beach scene is active with stall sellers, island hopping touters, swimmers, snorkellers, divers and of course coffee.

Further north of White Beach, past Station 0 is Diniwid Beach – my favourite. Quieter and with an excellent beach cafe, we found ourselves drawn here most days.

Hailing an e trike to get around the island meant being transported at a steady pace to beautiful locations where we swam, ate and drank.

Beyond the glitz that is Boracay though, lies a very different view. No need to venture far to experience the vast chasm that exists between the haves and have nots. That some will never know opportunity spawns abundant empathy.

On another note, the Philippines is on the cusp of the wet season. Days are sunshiny now, but the fences below are being set up to combat the notorious winds that will arrive later.

Had a real good time on beautiful Boracay. Love to return!
