Touristy it is, but medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber (on the Tauber River) is worth bottling and taking home. Just one hour by train from Nuremburg, it was the perfect Christmas village to while away a couple of days during the Christmas market month of December. Despite a steady stream of day trippers, we never found it busy. Hailed as the best preserved walled town in Europe, a surprising two thirds of the town’s 2500 people live within the walls.
If you plan on visiting this gem of a town, make sure you go to the right Rothenburg – there are several in Germany and some travellers end up in the wrong town. If you’re arriving by train, it’s a short 10 minute walk until you are inside the walls where there’s loads of accommodation.
