If you’re hard-wired into finding excellent free camping spots, consider the tiny town of Maidenwell, 30 kms from Nanango.
We camped with friends for 3 nights, thoroughly enjoying the camping site which doubles as the town’s sports ground. Our five vehicles (caravans and campers) made little impression on the spacious site and we found facilities like toilets and showers well maintained by Nanango Shire Council.
Further camping spots can be found next door at the town’s claim to fame – the Maidenwell Hotel, a terrific hotel. The bar is roomy, staff are friendly and the tree shaded verandahs just perfect for afternoon drinks. Dinner here did not disappoint.
Worth checking out are two buoyant shops, both boasting cafes and an array of interesting goods. I’ve sourced the photos below from the shops’ active Facebook sites.
Two kilometres from town are the Coomba Falls and Waterhole. We walked from the camping area to the Falls enjoying the climb up and down the calf burning hills. Hundreds of grass trees dot the very green landscape.
Appealingly, Maidenwell is within cooee of Bunya Mountains and striking distance of Kingaroy’s rather pleasant wineries.
