Beautiful Strasbourg in France was our town of choice for Christmas Day and it lived up to all of our expectations. Strasbourg’s charming Old Town dominated by Notre Dame Cathedral and cobbled streets was sheer enchantment.

Stunning architecture at every turn

We couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate Christmas. Three nights here gave us time to eat, drink and be merry, and also to have a good look around.
While I billed this trip as ‘pretty not gritty’ and was determined to stay well away from ‘issues’, it was hard not to take on board a couple whilst here in Strasbourg. Last year at the Christmas Markets, a man armed with a gun and knife killed 5 and injured 11 Christmas revellers near the cathedral. This year, the markets were basked in all their festive glory, although ever present were heavily armed military and police patrolling the streets on foot in groups of four.
Also, it was in Strasbourg that we became aware of the consequences of the French strikes. Talking to an American couple in a bar one night over schnapps, they told us that their river cruise which was destined for Paris was forced to stay two unplanned nights in Strasbourg because the Parisian lock keepers were on strike. Then, our Flix bus arrived hours late in Strasbourg from Paris due to the strikes. If you’re headed to France during the strike period, stay informed.
